The $10,000 Sweep

Broadcast History: Unsold Pilot, August 4, 1972

Host: Jack Clark
Announcer: Don Pardo
Executive Producer: Bob Stewart
Director: Mike Gargiulo
Packager: Bob Stewart Productions
Studio: ABC Television Center, New York City, New York

Main Game: Two couples competed, one couple the returning champions and the other couple the challengers. Jack Clark reads a question. (Example: What is so unusual about this film?) The answer is shown on the screen. The player who reads the answer on their screen buzzes in and gives the correct clue. If the clue is acceptable, their partner gets a chance to guess the answer. If the clue is not accepted, their opponents get the clue and the partner gets to answer. (Clue: It is animated and it is X-Rated. Answer: "Fritz the Cat".) The first question is worth five points and each subsequent question is worth one point more than the previous one. 100 points won the game. If both players buzz in at the same time and both lights are on, the question is disqualified and a new one is asked. If the challenging team won the game, they got $2,000. Their second game would be worth $4,000. Their third game was worth $6,000. And their final game was worth $10,000. If the championship team lost, they lost half their winnings.

INTERESTING FACTS AND TRIVIA

In the opening spiel, the $10,000 cheque is shown with the date on top, this makes it easy for me to know when the pilot was made.

Jack Clark had many years of experience in the game show business as host and announcer. In the late 1970s, he hosted Cross-Wits. He also announced several Hollywood-based shows like Stefan Hatos/Monty Hall's Split Second (ABC, 1972-75), Goodson-Todman's Tattletales (CBS) in 1974 (Gene Wood announced from 1975 to 1978), Merv Griffin's Wheel of Fortune (NBC/Syn.) from 1980 until his death in 1988, and many others.

Don Pardo's first Goodson-Todman announcing gig was Winner Take All (NBC) in 1952. He announced several Bob Stewart shows in the 1960s and 1970s as well as some Goodson-Todman shows that were still based in New York, and currently does Saturday Night Live on NBC.

Home Games: None.

Episode Existence: Only the pilot exists. The $10,000 Sweep never made it to a series. This pilot aired on GSN on October 28, 2000 as part of an "Unsold Pilots" marathon.
